An Independence Police chase involving a stolen vehicle in the overnight hours Wednesday morning ended with a suspect trying to fend off police dogs.
According to police, shortly after 3 a.m. Wednesday an officer noticed a reported stolen vehicle pulling out of the Budget Inn motel in the 9900 block of E. U.S. 40 on the western edge of Independence. The driver refused to pull over, and the ensuing chase went into Merriam, Kansas. Police lost sight of the vehicle and ended the chase 11 minutes after it started but soon located the vehicle abandoned and called in the K-9 unit.
Police dogs soon helped locate the male suspect who was arrested a shortly before 4 a.m. and treated for “minor injuries.”
The case remains under investigation, and charges are pending.
