A house fire early Sunday in Independence displaced a Harrisonville police officer and his family. The officer had been on duty, though his longtime girlfriend – also a law enforcement officer – and their children had been home and got out of the house safely.
The fire occurred in a cul-de-sac at the 3900 block of South Pleasant, west of Noland Road and near Interstate 70. Authorities said the house didn't suffer great fire damage, but smoke and water damage rendered it uninhabitable. Harrisonville Police had said on social media that the fire was investigated as a possible arson, but Independence Police said investigators ruled it inconclusive regarding arson and have closed the investigation. The fire started just outside the house, possible from an equipment explosion.
Harrisonville Police said the officer and his family have found temporary housing, and much of the children's clothing was salvageable since their rooms were on the opposite side of the house from the fire.
