An Independence child was rushed to the hospital Monday evening after he was struck by a vehicle driving in the area of East 10th Street and South Ash Avenue.

The accident happened about 7:35 p.m. Monday, Independence police said, when a group of children were riding bikes and skateboards in the street and the vehicle struck a 7-year-old boy on a skateboard. Police said the boy apparently had darted in front of traffic, and there was no suspicion of impaired driving, though the accident remains under investigation.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated, police said, while the boy suffered serious injuries, including broken bones, but is not believed to be in critical condition.
