WHAT THE SHOW IS ABOUT: At the turn of the 1930s, Berlin is still in the midst of post-World War I economic depression and is transitioning from the center of underground avant-garde cultural epicenter to the beginnings of Hitler's regime and the rise of the Nazi Party. Cliff Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next novel, visits Berlin and on his first night visits the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient Emcee. Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, talented cabaret performer from Britain but also a lost soul. They begin a relationship that blossoms into a dream-like romance.

As time passes, the situation in Berlin changes from exciting to ominous. Ernst, Cliff's first German friend, turns out to be an up-and-coming member of the Nazis, and Herr Schultz, a fellow boarder at Fraulein Schneider’s boarding house and briefly her fiancé, is the victim of an anti-Semitic hate crime. Cliff also gets roughed up after he refuses to make another delivery for Ernst, and when he learns Sally is pregnant, he decides they must leave for America at once before things get worse. Sally, afraid, confused and unsure she could trade the cabaret lifestyle for motherhood, gets an abortion and tells Cliff he must leave without her – which he does, heartbroken. On the train to Paris, Cliff reflects on his experiences and begins to write his novel (from stageagent.com).
