On Jan. 22, 2006, a beautiful black lab that was very pregnant, was dropped off at the Independence Animal Shelter. The shelter staff called Animals Best Friends and ABF took the mother dog. A few days later ABF had nine beautiful black lab puppies and a very caring mother dog.
My lab was one of those puppies and so was Tuners. Tuners (aka Petunia) found a wonderful home and has been treasured by her family ever since. Tuners’ Dad recently contacted ABF to let us know how much Tuners means to him and his family. We received the following from Tuners Dad...
“Tuners (Petunia) turned 12 on Jan. 22nd. We adopted her from your organization in October of 2008 when she was not quite 3 years old. She's been such a good dog. Tuners has always been patient with kids and everyone else for that matter. ABF had a photo of Tuners with bows in her ears when she was a puppy. That wasn't the last time she has had bows in her ears or has worn hats, scarves, etc.
When we travel, Tuners gets to stay with a woman who typically boards larger dogs. Tuners has been so good that it doesn't even matter if the kennels are full, she gets to stay in the house with the family. The kennel owner’s little girls fight over who Tuners gets to sleep with at night. She found out that Tuners was a great option for occupying her kids for playtime during the day. This was a selling point for us when we adopted Tuners, because we had very young grandkids at the time. We needed to be absolutely sure that they would be safe around our dog. Tuners is so good that the kids even help me brush her teeth.
One other special note about Tuners. She came to us at a tough time for our family. Sadly only a few months after adopting Tuners my wife of 30 years was diagnosed with a very serious form of cancer. This was a very stressful time for all of us. Tuners was so affectionate to my wife Sally and stayed by her side for much of the sickness. The cancer took my Sally in January of 2010. It was tough after she passed, but Tuners bonded with me like glue. She has absolutely been the consummate companion. Tuners is the most obedient and affectionate dog I've ever had and I've had many throughout the years.
As you can see by the photo, Tuners is fit and healthy. She gets exercise every day, rain or shine, hot or cold. I believe that it's kept her in good shape. Her weight now is within a pound or two of when she came to us. Tuners still jumps into the back of my SUV for our twice daily walks although she is starting to slow down a bit.
Thanks again for your great service. Tuners has turned out to be a true gift,” Brad.
