A suspicious device discovered late Monday afternoon in an Independence apartment complex proved to be a serious threat.
Independence Police said Tuesday that the device removed late Monday from the Independence Ridge Apartments at the 19000 block of East 37th Terrace was an improvised explosive device made of consumer-grade fireworks with added shrapnel. IPD's bomb squad had safely removed the homemade bomb by about 10:30 p.m. Monday and destroyed it at a secure, off-site location.
Apartment maintenance staff found the bomb shortly before 5 p.m. inside an unoccupied apartment that was being repaired. Police evacuated one building at the apartment complex, which is directly north of the Independence Commons retail area, and asked residents in nearby buildings to stay inside and away from windows if possible. Several residents waited in their cars on 37th Terrace while police worked the scene.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
