Santa-Cali-Gon Days Festival organizer Lois McDonald Tuesday announced the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band as the event’s headliner.

Shepherd will headline the show on the Main Stage on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 9:30 p.m.

“The caliber of this entertainment makes it really exciting for us,” McDonald said. “It’s going to be a big night on the Main Stage.”

Shepherd is an award-winning guitarist of blues-infused rock who has released eight albums. Seven of those albums have reached No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart.

His “Lay It On Down” album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart in August 2017 and peaked at No. 34 on the Billboard 200 album chart. His “Goin’ Home” album in 2014 peaked at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 chart.

His top single was “Blue On Black,” which hit No. 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 9, 1998.

According to McDonald, the festival’s entertainment committee has been wanting him to play at Santa-Cali-Gon Days “for many years.”

Since teaching himself how to play the guitar at the age of 16, Shepherd has earned five Grammy nominations, two Billboard Music Awards and the Blues Foundation’s Keeping the Blues Alive Award.

Shepherd has played in Independence before, headlining a show at the Independence Events Center (now Silverstein Eye Centers Arena) on June 4, 2011.

The bands Jericho Woods (6:30 p.m.) and Stone Senate (7:45 p.m.) will play prior to Shepherd on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Country singer Jacob Bryant will headline the Sunday, Sept. 2, show at 9:30 p.m. Randy Woody & Southbound Band (6:30 p.m.) and Dan Johnson (7:45 p.m.) will open that show.

The festival committee is expected to announce two more entertainers soon for the Friday, Aug. 31 show, with the headliner being named on July 28. Hillbilly Vegas will play at 7:45 p.m., preceded by another artist at 6:30.
