When an Independence mother noticed her 9-year-old daughter scratching between her legs, she said a man named Zachary Sprowls had frequently touched her, exposed himself and shown her pornographic material.

Jackson County prosecutors Tuesday charged the 27-year-old Sprowls of Raytown with multiple felony child-sex charges – five counts of statutory sodomy for deviate sexual intercourse, two counts of statutory sodomy and one count each of second-degree child molestation and statutory rape.

According to court documents, Sprowls admitted to police of approximately 50 sexual encounters with the victim dating back to when she was 7 years old. Earlier, the victim had detailed several of the encounters with investigators and said Sprowls would threaten her in some way make sure she didn't tell anyone. Many of the encounters happened at her house, she said.

Sprowls said he kept photos of the victim – some taken by her, he claimed – on his phone. He said he knew the sexual encounters and the pictures were wrong and against the law.

Prosecutors requested a $150,000 cash bond.
