Federal investigators will be looking Monday's trench incident in Blue Springs, in which emergency crews had to rescue an injured worker at a house construction site.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Monday in residential area near the intersection Eighth Street and Moreland School Road, just west of Adams Dairy Parkway. The trench, which did not collapse, was reportedly 10 to 12 feet deep.

A spokesperson for the Kansas City office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration confirmed the department had opened a case with C&C Ditching and Grading out of Lawson regarding the accident. The spokesperson added that C&C has no prior history of complaints with OSHA.

The worker was injured when he apparently got hit by a piece of construction equipment and was knocked into the trench. He reportedly broke his leg, leaving him unable to get out of the trench. After shoring up the walls, emergency crews rescued the injured worker at about 6:20 p.m., hoisting him up on a stretcher by using a fire truck ladder.
