As work continues on the Interstate 470 bridge repairs in Independence, motorists should be on alert as crews will be shifting traffic this weekend.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, beginning early Sunday morning crews will switch traffic on the I-470/M-291 bridges from the inside lanes to the currently closed outside lanes. That work will last until approximately Monday afternoon, and once that shift is complete, crews will reopen the loop ramp from westbound I-70 to southbound I-470.
All four loop ramps at that intersection have been closed since bridge repairs started last month.
The outside lane on northbound I-470/M-291 has remained closed for the U.S. 40 and Little Blue River bridges, while the southbound lanes on those bridges have been completely open for more than a week.
Elsewhere, MoDOT will close portions of eastbound I-70 and reduce it to one lane next week to accommodate work for the new bridge for Pittman Road, which will likely cause significant traffic delays.
From 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, the two right lanes near Pittman Road will be closed. From 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, the inside and middle lanes near Pittman Road will be closed. The ramp from Blue Ridge Cutoff onto eastbound I-70 will be closed during those times to help ease traffic congestion.
