Cancer support program at Timothy Lutheran

Timothy Lutheran Church, 301 E. Wyatt Road, Blue Springs, is offering a nine-session program, “Cancer Companions,” that runs the first and third Wednesdays (6-8 p.m.) through Feb. 20.

The program is designed to provide support to cancer patients as well as family, friends or caregivers in need of a listening ear or caring heart. Topics include faith, questions, healing, prayer, stress reduction, relationships, communication and healthy living. Cost of $20 includes the Cancer Companions workbook. Lord’s Acre Sale at Oakland UMC

Oakland United Methodist Church, 30701 E. Truman Road, Independence, will host is annual Lord's Acre Sale on Oct. 13. The event recalls the days when church members set aside an acre's worth of produce sales to give to the church.

Items available for auction will include a hand-stitched quilt from the Oakland Ladies Aid Society, handcrafts and woodwork, baked good, fresh eggs and vegetables and fruits, jam, jelly and “open-fire” apple butter. Lunch of chili dog or sloppy joe sandwich, baked beans, potato salad and choice of homemade pie will be served 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., when the auction begins.


Extra MercyMe show added

Due to popular demand, the Christian rock band MercyMe has added a second show to its national tour stop next month in Independence. The band was already scheduled to play Friday, Oct. 26 at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena as part of the “Imagine Nation Tour” and has added an Oct. 25 show because the Friday show is sold out. MercyMe is a five-time Grammy Award nominee and has sold more than 9 million albums. The recent hit film “I Can Only Imagine” is based on the life of band frontman Bart Millard, who wrote the song several years ago after the loss of his father. Mount Washington UMC Trunk or Treat

Mount Washington United Methodist Church, 584 S. Arlington Ave., Independence, will have a community meal 5-6 p.m. Oct. 27, followed by “Trunk or Treat” 6-7:30 p.m. in front of the church. Liberty Street Community of Christ Church, 416 N. Liberty St., Independence, will host a free “trunk or treat” and free chili dinner 5-6 p.m. Oct. 28 in the south parking lot.


Booth space available at St. Mark’s Expo

St. Mark's Catholic Church on Lee's Summit Road in Independence will host its 13th annual Craft Show and Business Expo from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 4. The event is a chance to promote your business or sell your handiwork. Booth space is $50, and vendors keep all proceeds.
