The Interstate 470/Missouri 291 bridge at Interstate 70 should be fully open by the end of the week, as crews have completed a bridge repair project that has bottlenecked traffic for a couple months.
The Missouri Department of Transportation said Tuesday that crews will begin opening all currently closed lanes and loop ramps at the interchange beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday until 5 a.m. Thursday – weather permitting. During that time, motorists should expect to see various lane shifts. MoDOT had promised the project would be done by November but anticipated it would be done in mid-October.
The outside ramps at I-470/I-70 have remained open through the whole project, and the loop ramps to and from westbound I-70 were reopened as work progressed. Crews had also re-opened the I-470 bridges over U.S. 40 and the Little Blue River in prior weeks after having traffic down to one lane through the whole nearly mile-long span.
The bridge repairs in Independence were part of a prolonged project beginning in the spring of 2017 to rehab more than a dozen bridges along the I-470 corridor.
