An Independence man was sentenced Thursday morning to 14 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of child molestation, stemming from two separate cases.
Damon Atchley, 25, was charged in July 2017 and had also been charged with statutory sodomy in one case. Jackson County prosecutors dropped the latter charge as part of the plea agreement, and Judge James Kanatzar sentenced Atchley ordered the two 14-year sentences to run concurrent.
According to court documents, Atchley was seen in May 2016 reaching down one victim's diaper. The witness identified another possible victim, who later told police Atchley had touched the then-12-year-old victim sexually more than once in 2014 or 2015. The victim also said Atchley had a notebook that contained names of past victims and that a false panel inside a dresser hid the notebook.
According to court documents, Atchley told police he touched the genitals of the victims. He also said he had pictures of the child victims on his phone, as well as pictures of another child that he wanted to "do stuff with."
