An armed man who tried to rob an Independence convenience store Thursday evening instead got shot and was found by police in a commercial parking lot six miles away on 39th Street.
The man was hospitalized and in critical condition but also in police custody, Independence Police said Friday. No one at the convenience store was injured.
The attempted armed robbery and shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Conoco station at U.S. 24 and Jennings Road. Police had been called, and when they arrived they learned a clerk shot at the robber but didn't know if he'd hit him. The robber had fled in a car driven by someone else.
Soon after, police were called regarding a shooting at the parking lot between Fazoli's and the strip that houses McAlister's Deli and Sprint, among other businesses. They found just the victim – the would-be robber whose friend or friends dropped him off there instead of driving up to the Centerpoint Medical Center main entrance and possibly being seen on camera.
Police locked down that parking lot, which is about 500 yards from the main entrance at Centerpoint, because they didn't know at first if a shooter was nearby.
