“First Day Hikes” are being held at state parks across Missouri today.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources says events are planned at 31 state parks and historic sites, with guided hikes ranging in difficulty from easy to moderate and up to seven and a half miles.
The DNR says almost 55,000 people took part in these hikes nationwide last year. Participants are encouraged to log their adventures on social media with #FirstDayHikes.
At parks in the region:
• Watkins Mill State Park near Lawson. The event is from 10 a.m. to noon. Meet in the east dam parking lot.
• Weston Bend State Park near Weston, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Meet at the Weston Bluffs Trail trailhead in Beverly.
• Lewis and Clark State Park, on Missouri 9 near Rushville, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Meet at the park office.
• Wallace State Park near Cameron. 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Meet in the campground shower house parking lot.
Also, Knob Noster State Park, off U.S. 50 about 45 minutes east of Lee’s Summit, has a hike set for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Meet at the Buteo Trail trailhead.
