Two pets died in a Sugar Creek house fire Thursday afternoon despite firefighters' efforts to save them.
The fire started shortly after noon in the 10600 block of Felton Street, just inside Sugar Creek's western border with Independence, and smoke was coming out of the house but the lone occupant was out of the house when firefighters arrived, Fire Chief Pat Casey said. They faced heavy black smoke going inside and quickly knocked out the fire, then located one cat and one dog.
Both animals were given CPR and oxygen, Casey said, but neither one survived. Another cat was still missing but was believed to have escaped through the basement.
Casey said the fire was accidental and caused by mishandling discarded smoking materials. One Independence Fire pumper unit assisted Sugar Creek Fire with the blaze. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported.
