A counselor at Van Horn High School faces sex-crime charges involving a student less than 17 years old.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Meghann Wells, 30, with possession of child pornography, statutory sodomy, furnishing pornographic material to a minor and unlawful use of a weapon. A spokesperson for the Independence School District said Wells no longer works for the district.
According to court documents, police were told Thursday of sexual activity between Wells and the victim, who is not specified as a boy or girl, and that the two had exchanged inappropriate text messages with each other.
“When an allegation was reported to a staff member, the district followed protocol by reporting this to the Missouri Children’s Division and contacting police,” district spokesperson Jana Corrie said in an email.
In an interview with Child Protection Services, the victim said the victim and Wells exchanged sexually explicit pictures and videos and described two different sexual acts between the victim and Wells at Wells' apartment in 2018.
According to court documents, Wells told police she and the victim started to “sext” in the spring of 2018 and also exchanged sexually explicit pictures and videos. She admitted to one of the sexual acts at her apartment in December but denied the other one.
Police later found a loaded 9mm handgun in Wells' purse, which she had in the school.
Wells' bond has been set at $50,000, 10 percent.
