Two seniors at Van Horn High School have been honored by the Rotary Club of Independence as students of the month.

• N'ya Fritz has received the McCoy Award and has been honored by KC Scholars and selected first-team all-conference. She has participated in volleyball, basketball and track and field and volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club in addition to working.

She plans to study education and African-American studies at the University of Missouri and wants to be a middle school teacher.

N'ya is the daughter of Carlos Fritz.

• Ryan Reese has been named student of the year for orchestra and for the arts and education academy for Van Horn Pathways, has received a Music Arts Institute grant, been named courtwarming king and inducted into the International Thespian Society for student achievement.

He has been involved in theater, chamber orchestra, the Spirit of Independence Concert Band and has run the lights for performances at Van Horn. He also has been involved with the Maywood Baptist Church youth group, Sunday school teaching, Boy Scouts, working for the school district and volunteering for the Independence Puppetry Arts Institute.

Ryan plans to go to community college for two years and attend a four-year school and major in elementary education.
