A Kansas City man died in the pre-dawn hours Friday morning when he was hit by two vehicles on Missouri 291 just south of the Missouri River.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Jeffrey McCombs was standing in the northbound lanes of M-291 at Cement City Road, the road leading to the Independence water plant, at 4:25 a.m. when two vehicles hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The first vehicle was a 2015 Dodge driven by a 26-year-old man from Independence, who remained at the scene. The second driver fled the scene, but Collin Stosburg, a spokesperson for the Highway Patrol, said a woman called later after seeing the accident on the news and reported she was possibly the other driver but didn't fully realize it at the time. Stosburg said that's not uncommon with an accident that happens at night.
