As part of an exhibit highlighting several graduating seniors, illustrations by Alex Meier of Independence will be presented. The illustrations based on historical eras in Japanese history and culture as well as digital media. Meier, of Buckner, attended Center Place Restoration School.

The exhibit will be on display for all of May in the Campanella Gallery. A public reception is from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 10 in the gallery.

 

MCC-Blue River Celebrating new cybersecurity facility

Metropolitan Community College’s Blue River campus, 20301 E. Missouri 78 in Independence, will celebrate its new cybersecurity lab at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday.

The event will run from 4 to 6 p.m., with remarks at 4:30 p.m. by MCC Chancellor Kimberly Beatty and interim campus President Michael Banks. The new cybersecurity lab is in the Public Safety Institute building.

 

Students present research at showcase

Local students were selected to present research as part of Graceland University’s Scholars’ Showcase:

• Alexandrya Weston of Independence was selected for a poster session in Science and Math: Lavender and Eucalyptus Oils and Their Potential Antibacterial Effects.

• Brenden Chandler of Independence was selected for a poster session in Science and Math: Lavender and Eucalyptus Oils and Their Potential Antibacterial Effects.

• David Hamar of Blue Springs was selected for a poster session in Science and Math: The effect of pesticide runoff on the growth and development of Spongilla.

• Sydney Dorrance of Independence was selected for a poster session in Science and Math: Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Chicken Microbiota .

• William Weston of Independence was selected for a demonstration in Science and Math: Brain Breaks.

• Natalie Harper of Lee’s Summit was selected for an oral presentation in Humanities: The Inhumanities of Humane Societies.

• Dylan Fox of Lee’s Summit was selected for a demonstration in Science and Math: Brain Breaksa poster session in Science and Math: Mobile Application Development.

• Kayla Schaefer of Lee’s Summit was selected for a poster session in Science and Math: The Impact of Mindful Meditation on Heart Rate, Systolic Blood Pressure, Emotional Reactiveness and Mindfulness.

 

Bennet and Jackson inducted into Alpha Chi

Jessica Bennett of Independence and Lee Jackson of Blue Springs were inducted into Graceland University’s chapter of the Alpha Chi honor society. To be accepted, students must be in the top ten percent of their class.

 

Orozco and Hamar earn roles in Graceland’s ‘Macbeth’

Daniel Orozco of Grain Valley and David Hamar of Blue springs are cast in Graceland University’s production of “Macbeth.” Orozco was cast as Angus, and Damar as Donalblain.

 

DeHaan and Harper inducted into honor society

Alexander DeHaan of Independence and Natalie Harper of Lee’s Summit were inducted into the Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society for 2019 at Graceland University. DeHaan was inducted as vice president, and Harper as president. The objectives of the society are to recognize scholastic achievement and to foster ties between students.
