1 'Morning's at Seven' – Encore Theater of Independence presents this Paul Osborn comedy at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Powerhouse Theatre at Sermon Center, 201 N. Dodgion St. The play centers around a quartet of sisters, three of whom are married, all living in close proximity in small-town Midwest in the early 20th century. 3 Starry Starry Night – 3 p.m. Saturday, Mid-Continent Public Library North Independence branch, 317 W. U.S. 24. Explore the stories behind the stars with wacky Professor Van Gogh Go and StoneLion Puppet Theatre. Free event for ages 3-older.

4 Summer concert series – Friday at the Independence Uptown Market. Two local acts, the Brad Cunningham Band and Arkansauce, are scheduled to perform at the free family event, and food and beverages will be available for purchase. 5 Burr Oak Woods – There’s plenty to do Saturday at the nature center at Burr Oak, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs. There’s family fishing 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with registration required. Learn the basics with provided equipment. From 10 to 11 a.m. is Backpacking in Missouri with an Appalachian Trail hiker. Discover great trails in the state and learn how to pack for a multi-day hike. This walk-in event is open to all ages. At the Aylward Educational Pond from 12:30 to 2 p.m. is a family program to learn basic canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard strokes.
