A sex offender in Independence has been sentenced to federal prison for possessing and exchanging child pornography.
A U.S. district judge Wednesday sentenced Harrison Elliot Combs, 28, to 15 years in federal prison without parole, plus 20 years of supervised release after his prison term.
Combs, who had a prior conviction for possessing child pornography, pleaded guilty last August to one count each of receiving child porn online and possessing child porn and eight counts of attempting to distribute child porn.
According to court documents, the case began when an investigator was looking into a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. On three occasions, Combs' computer downloaded child porn from the network. In September 2016, officers obtained a search warrant for his apartment and seized a cell phone and other items that contained child porn files – about 1,600 images and 168 videos in all.
In January 2017, investigators again noted Combs' computer had downloaded child porn – more than 1,900 files – from a file-sharing network. Officers again got a search warrant arrested Combs and seized his cell phone.
The FBI and Kansas City Police investigated the case.
