A woman driving the wrong way and allegedly under the influence Monday night on Interstate 70 killed a Blue Springs mother and injured her daughter when she collided with their car head-on.
Heather Blackman, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene after the crash, which happened at about 9:25 p.m. Monday in the eastbound lanes of I-70, a quarter-mile west of Adams Dairy Parkway.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 37-year-old Desiree Smith of Blue Springs was driving west when she collided with Blackman's vehicle. Smith was taken to the hospital with serious injuries and later arrested in connection with manslaughter, DUI, driving the wrong direction and driving without insurance.
Blackman's daughter, 18-year-old Chloe Atkinson, was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, according to the Highway Patrol. In a gofundme.com post started to raise money for funeral expenses, Blackman’s sister said Atkinson is one of Blackman’s five children – a sixth child died at 6 months.
The accident temporarily blocked both lanes of traffic on eastbound I-70, causing traffic to be diverted onto Missouri 7.
