A shoplifting suspect injured an off-duty Independence police officer working at Wal-Mart Tuesday evening.
According to police, the officer was working at the Wal-Mart at 4000 S. Bolger Road and tried to stop the suspect as she left the store. The woman ran to her vehicle and drove away, hitting the officer with her vehicle, a four-door sedan, as she drove away. The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation, and the woman reportedly ran a red light and almost caused a wreck as the got on the northbound M-291 entrance ramp. Police reported less than two hours after the incident that the woman had been located and was in custody.
