A Kansas City man drowned Saturday in Lake Jacomo after he reportedly jumped in to save a couple children who ultimately made it back to shore.
Divers recovered the body of Fabian Torres, 31, at 3:47 p.m. Sunday north of the lake's north boat ramp on the western shore. Torres drowned about 4 p.m. Saturday, and divers called off the search before 9:30 p.m. and resumed about 8 a.m. Sunday.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Torres was on a boat with family when he noticed two children wearing life jackets whom he thought were struggling. He jumped into the water to help them but never resurfaced. Torres was not wearing a life jacket. The children made their way out of the water safely, the Highway Patrol said.
Lee's Summit Underwater Recovery, the Lee's Summit Fire Department and Jackson County park rangers and sheriff's deputies assisted with the search.
