1 U.S. Gymnastics Championships – Thursday-Sunday at the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City. Three gymnasts who train at GAGE in Blue Springs will be among those competing for national titles and national team berths. Thursday and Saturday are junior and senior men's competitions. 2 First Battle of Independence tour – 9 a.m., Saturday, at the 1859 Jail and Marshal's Home Museum, 217 N. Main St., Independence. The Civil War Round Table of Western Missouri will host a free walking tour of the First Battle of Independence. Group president Mike Calvert will be the tour guide. The battle took place Aug. 11, 1862 at and near the Square, as Confederate forces managed a surprise attack on the Union force that had been in command of a federal post for a couple months and used the jail as a prison for Confederates. 3 Summer concert series – 7:30 p.m. Friday, Independence Uptown Market, 211 W. Truman Road. The band Cadillac Flambé plays for the final concert series of the year. Sponsored by the city of Independence and Independence Chamber of Commerce. Admission is free and open to the public, and lawn chairs for seating are welcome. Food and drink will be available for sale.
4 Back to School Bash – 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and Love Fund for Children will host this free family event. Organizers will hand out 5,000 backpacks with school supplies to elementary students and give away 200 booster seats. More than 20 vendors will be on hand to provide employment opportunities, immunizations for middle and high school students, STEM education and more. Food trucks will also be available. The event is open to the public, including people who live outside Jackson County.
5 Critters at Burr Oak – Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs, has a variety of events Saturday. The critter feeding schedule for amphibians, fish and turtles is 3-3:30 p.m., and the caterpillar hunt is 10 a.m.-noon. Neither event requires registration.
