Principal Neal Johnson greeted as many students as possible with high fives as they entered the first school day at Cassell Park, Independence's new elementary school. Johnson had previously been assistant principal at Nowlin Middle School a block away from Cassell Park. The new school became necessary due to student population growth on the city's west wide, and district voters made it possible by passing a $38 million bond issue two years ago.
