An Independence girl who had just started her freshman year at Truman High School died early Sunday in a single-car rollover crash on Interstate 70 at Stadium Drive.

Hailey Jeffries, 14, was one of four people in a Hyundai that was westbound on I-70 shortly after midnight Sunday. The car was speeding through a 55 mph construction zone, Kansas City Police said, when the driver, for unknown reasons, lost control and the car went off the roadway to the right and flipped multiple times.

Jeffries was thrown from from the car, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A second passenger was partially ejected and remains in life-threatening condition, police said. The driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and a third passenger was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Kansas City Police said only the driver had been wearing her seat belt when the accident happened. The two other passengers are also 14 years old.

Jeffries' obituary appears on page A5 in today's Examiner.
