A man in an overnight standoff with police in Sugar Creek shot and killed himself Thursday morning.
Sugar Creek Police first responded about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday night to the 11500 block of Hackett Street, east of Sterling Avenue and a couple blocks south of elementary schools. Police said a man was shooting up the inside of his home and at officers.
Police said officers fired no shots during the ensuing standoff, which lasted about seven hours. Police evacuated some neighbors, and others were told to stay in their basements or the back of their houses for safety. After several hours, officers used tear gas to try to convince the man to come out, then eventually went inside and found the man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Multiple area agencies assisted with the incident.
