1 Beginning ancestry research – 2-3 p.m. Friday, Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 S. Lee's Summit Road, Independence. A beginner-level class for adults in researching one's family history. Search the U.S.census from 1790 to 1940 as well as immigration, vital, military, court, church and ethnic records. Explore city directories, the Social Security death index and much more. 2 Winter birding 101 – 2-3 p.m., Saturday, Mid-Continent Public Library South Independence Branch, 13700 E. 35th St. Winter is an ideal time to explore nature through birding. Discover which birds make Missouri their winter home, learn how to identify them and create a feeder for birds to enjoy. For ages 5-older, and presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation. 3 Growing native plants from seed – 10-11:30 a.m., Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs. Want to plant native plants at the lowest cost possible? With a little time, planning and patience you can grow your own garden with pocket change. Presenters will share some specific techniques for successful seed germination and tips on taking care of your seedlings until they’re ready to plant. As long as supplies last, each family will take home a tray of freshly-sown native plant seed pots. Open to all ages, with no registration required.
4 Mammal mania – 1:30-2:30 p.m., Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs. Use all your mammalian senses as we learn about both common and rare species of mammals in Missouri. View the outdoors from their point of view as we head out on the trail in search of mammal signs. We will create and taste test something that only mammals can make. Open to all ages, with no registration required.
5 Kansas City Mavericks – The hometown minor league hockey team is home again this weekend, hosting the Wichita Thunder both Friday and Saturday at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
