1 Christmas tree lightings:

• The Grain Valley 2019 Holiday Festival and Mayor’s Christmas Tree lighting is at 6 tonight in Armstrong Park, 711 Main St. Santa and Mrs. Claus will attend. There will be free hot chocolate and cookies, Christmas caroling and an outdoor holiday movie.

• The Independence Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting is at 6 p.m. Friday, Hiram Young Park, 215 E. Lexington Ave. Enjoy a performance from the Christmas Carolers, Santa’s arrival on a mule-drawn sleigh and pizza, hot chocolate and cookies available starting at 5:45 p.m. This year's special guest is former Royals outfielder Jim Eisenreich. Afterwards, enjoy the Living Windows display on the Independence Square and check out Merry at the Market, from 6:30-10 p.m. at the Uptown Market, 211 W. Truman Road. Live music for both the kids party 6:30-8 and the adults party 8-10.

2 Mayor's Christmas Carnival – 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Sermon Community Center, 201 N. Dodgion St., Independence. The free family event includes balloon creations, carnival games, prizes, popcorn and a chance to get your picture taken with Santa Claus. The 34th annual Mayor's Christmas Concert is 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Community of Christ Auditorium, 1001 W. Walnut St.

3 Missouri Town Christmas – Missouri Town 1855, 8010 E. Park Road, Lee's Summit, will host its annual Christmas Celebration from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Warm hearth fires, simple but delicious food, period music, an appearance by Belsnickle and piping hot cider await guests. 4 Warm from the Oven: Cinnamon Rolls – 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Mid-Continent Public Library Grain Valley Branch, 101 S.W. Eagles Parkway, with presenter Richard King. Create made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls in this step-by-step class that will take you from making the dough to creating icing. Participants will take home a pan of rolls to bake. 5  Birds and Nature Art – Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs, is hosting a pair of free, no-registration events Saturday. “Backyard Birds and Hike” is 10-11 a.m. Explore the feathery creatures of our backyards, and head outside to explore the nearby woods for cool bird species (weather dependent). “Nature Art: Holiday Nature Craft” is noon-2:30 p.m. Craft up some fun using nature-made materials. Walk in anytime to complete two on-your-own crafts.
