A single-vehicle crash pre-dawn Friday near Grain Valley left two people dead.

The crash happened about 4 a.m. Friday on East Old U.S. 40 between Grain Valley and Oak Grove. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the male and female passengers dead. The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries, Sheriff Darryl Forte posted on social media.

The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the crash, but Forte said excessive speed appeared to play a role. Investigators have not released whether any occupant had been wearing a seat belt or which direction the vehicle was heading.
