A suspect who tried to flee from Independence police on Thursday is in the hospital after a crash following a brief chase.

The crash happened shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday near Truman Road and South Crescent Avenue, just west of Van Horn High School, and the short chase happened after a Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy did a plate check and confirmed the truck, a black Ford F-150, had been stolen.

The deputy radioed for nearby agency assistance in case the suspect tried to flee, a sheriff's spokesperson said. An IPD officer tried to pull over the vehicle, but the female driver fled starting at Truman and Northern Boulevard, less than a mile to the east.

The crash happened when the suspect lost control and hit a parked, unoccupied car, and the truck flipped over.

The Sheriff's Office said the suspect had an active felony warrant from Kansas, and she remains in the hospital under custody.
