A longtime Independence Police detective was among the two people who died in a three-car wreck Thursday in Gladstone.
Det. Sgt. Jason Young, 48, had just reached his 20-year anniversary with IPD in November, department spokesperson Jodi Grooms said. He was off duty at the time of the crash, which happened shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday on Northeast 64th Street near Walrond Avenue, east of Antioch Road/Prospect Avenue.
According to Gladstone Public Safety, a westbound pickup truck crossed into the eastbound lanes for unknown reasons, sideswiped one eastbound car and collided head-on with a Toyota four-door driven by Young. After the collision, Young’s car crashed through a residential privacy fence
Young and the pickup driver, 50-year-old Donald Raby of Gladstone, died at the hospital from their injuries. The driver of the sideswiped vehicle suffered minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
