A man survived and was taken to the hospital after he was hit by Amtrak’s River Runner train Tuesday afternoon in Independence.

The incident happened about 4:30 p.m. on the Union Pacific tracks west of Sterling Avenue. The eastbound train hit a man who was walking in the same direction, a Union Pacific officer said, and the man was conscious and communicating as he was taken from the scene.

The train stopped short of the crossing at Harvard Avenue, leaving no traffic blocked, and the train resumed its route at 6:10 p.m., about two hours behind schedule.

Last month, a River Runner train was westbound in the same area one afternoon when it struck a car that tried to go around the gates. Both people in the car suffered non-life-threatening injuries from that crash, police said.
