The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to replace the Blue Ridge Boulevard Bridge over 23rd Street at the west edge of Independence next month, closing the overpass until approximately November.

MoDOT plans to close the bridge at 10 p.m. April 3 (a Friday) for demolition work. In addition, 23rd Street – also known as Missouri 78 – will be closed at that time until approximately 5 a.m. April 6 for demolition. That road will be closed to through traffic at I-435 (eastbound) and Sterling Avenue (westbound) that weekend.

MoDOT is funding the $2.8 million project.

For northbound traffic on Blue Ridge, the posted detour will be right on 31st Street to Sterling Avenue, north on Sterling to Truman Road (Missouri 12), west on Truman to Stark Avenue, then right on Stark to Blue Ridge.

For southbound traffic on Blue Ridge, the posted detour will be Stark Avenue to eastbound Truman Road, turn right onto southbound Sterling Avenue, then right to westbound 31st Street over to Blue Ridge.

After demolition, 23rd/M-78 will have at least one lane open throughout construction, with brief exceptions for hauling equipment.

Government-funded infrastructure projects are allowed to continue during the current public health precautions against the coronavirus.
