A woman was wounded when she and a Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy exchanged gunfire Monday night in rural northeastern Jackson County.

The shooting happened about 11 p.m. in the area of North Perrin Road and Blue Mills Road, east of Twyman Road. According to Sheriff Darryl Forte, the deputy and a female suspect, who was driving, exchanged gunfire following a vehicle stop in the area.

The woman suffered a non-life threatening injury and is in custody; the officer was not injured. A passenger in the suspect vehicle was also in custody Tuesday morning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting.
