An Independence police officer shot and killed a burglary suspect Tuesday night following a chase into Kansas City.
The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m., in the area of Ninth Street and Bales Avenue in eastern Kansas City. According to Kansas City Police, Independence officers had chased the suspect to the area of 9th and Monroe Avenue. The suspect, an adult male whose name has not yet been released, then tried to run, and the officer shot him. Police had not specified Wednesday morning if the man had fired at the officer, but they recovered a gun at the scene. According to KSHB-TV news, police said the officer returned fire after the man shot at him.
That man was pronounced dead at the scene after officers gave first aid, police said. The officer was not injured.
IPD said officers had responded to a burglary in progress at the 900 block of South Crysler Avenue, north of 23rd Street in the area of Dollar General, and the chase started in that area, about seven miles away.
Per department policy, the IPD officer is on leave. Kansas City Police are investigating the shooting.
