A fatal crash Wednesday afternoon in northwest Independence stemmed from a shooting incident and then one driver chasing another on a busy highway.

The collision at U.S. 24 and Sterling Avenue at the Sugar Creek border killed the driver of a third car. Two more vehicles were also part of the crash, though police said no other injuries appeared to be life threatening.

Two people involved in the initial shooting were taken into custody at the scene, and police continue to investigate.

According to police, the shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officers were sent to the 800 block of North Emery Street, near U.S. 24 across from William Chrisman High School. The call was for a domestic disturbance with shots fired. When police arrived, the suspect vehicles had taken off west on U.S. 24, one chasing the other.

At Sterling, police said, the vehicle being chased slammed into a southbound vehicle, killing that driver, whose name has not yet been released. No one else was in that car.

Police said one of the vehicles in the chase had several bullet holes in it, though no one suffered any gunshot injuries.
