In good times and bad, art has something to say to us, and artists always find a way,

In Independence, for example, the Englewood Station Arts District has been doing a virtual art show, with hopes to resume Third Friday Artwalks in June.

Organizers are pressing ahead with other events. The annual Thadapalooza, which in 2019 raised $7,500 for scholarships, gay-straight alliance clubs at Independence high schools and West iNd Connection, is set for Aug. 15.

Big movie theater companies such as AMC and Cinemark have indicated that they are looking at opening in mid-summer. The release dates of several potential blockbusters have been pushed back by several months.

Meanwhile, Kansas City area theaters are doing what they can to adapt. While the large movie theater chains remain closed, local venues such as the Fine Arts Theaters, the Screenland on Armour and the Tivoli at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art have begun streaming movies. Those three also have set up funds for people to donate to keep their institutions alive and paying expenses while they are still shut down.

The Examiner reached out to locally owned theaters in Eastern Jackson County but got no response.

Knuckleheads, a popular live-music venue off Front Street in Kansas City, has scheduled more than half a dozen "10 percent" shows, meaning the space is filled only to 10 percent of capacity, in keeping with the city’s current rules. To help make up for that, the bands – "Outlaw Jim & The Whiskey Benders," "The Outtakes," "Brass Rewind" and others – have been doing shows at 7:30 and 10.

Museums are being more cautious. The National Frontier Trails Museum in Independence will open no sooner than July 1, according to the city.

The Truman Home in Independence remains closed, though the park grounds at the Truman Farm in Grandview – with a self-guided tour – is open from dawn until dusk.

One of the area’s top tourist attractions, the Truman Library in Independence, has been closed since last summer for an extensive renovation and expansion. It is still set for a fall opening and a full schedule of events.
