The city of Independence will open the Sermon Center, 201 N. Dodgion St., as an available cooling center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, as temperatures are forecast in the 90s with heat indices exceeding 100.

The cooling center, at the corner of Noland and Truman roads, will have water available as well as locations to rest and recharge cell phones. All patrons will be required to wear a face covering or mask and properly social distance while inside. Face coverings will be provided to those who do not have one.

Mid-Continent Public Library branches are not available as cooling centers due to current capacity limits and limited visit times.
