Nola Ora Bacon died at Center Point Hospital on January 11, 2022 after 97 years, 1 month and 2 days of a full life.
Nola was born the sixth of 9 children to Kitty Ruth (Harvey) and David Leslie Galbreath at Almeria, Loop County, Nebraska on December 9, 1924. The family farmed and ranched and always had a large vegetable garden. She enjoyed sharing her fond memories of her childhood in the sandhills of Nebraska. In 1941 the family sold out and moved to Sargent. She attended schools in Taylor and Sargent, Nebraska. During WWII the family moved to Portland, Oregon and she worked for a time in the shipyards as a welder but didn’t care for it. She found a job in the produce department at Fred Myers which was much more to her liking.
She worked for Old American Insurance Company for 30 years until her retirement Dec 31, 1989.
She married Dwight Elmer Bacon June 19, 1945. Dwight had 2 children; Larry and Mary Thalia. Dwight and Nola added 2 more children to the family; Dawanna Jean and Dennis Dwight.
Dwight died April 9, 1995 after a long battle with Parkinson’s.
Nola liked to travel and after she met Wilbur Hochstedler, they had a travel trailer and visited many times with her sisters and brothers and their families all over, but particularly in Montana and Wyoming. She made her last visit in September 2021 to visit her nephew and family in Montana and her niece and family in Wyoming. She loved the trips up in the Bighorn Mountains and particularly wanted to see moose.
After Wilbur died in 2012, she spent several winters in her travel trailer at her daughter, Jean’s in Alabama.
Nola was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dwight, 3 sisters and 4 brothers, &her companion, Wilbur. She is survived by Dennis, Jean, Mary, Larry and 9 grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at Mount Washington Cemetery on Thursday, Jan 20, 2022.
