CEL endorsing DeLuccie, Medley for City Council seats

April 3 is a critical election in Independence.

The Citizens for Effective Leadership wants to share the candidates it is endorsing and the reasons why. For those not familiar, CEL supports “candidates for public office who are honest, informed, positive and committed to effective political leadership.”

There are two seats for City Council at-large.

We support incumbent Karen DeLuccie. She is independent minded, asks the tough questions and is concerned about city finances. She has served ably on the City Council and prior to that provided invaluable leadership on the City Planning Commission.

We are taking the unusual step of endorsing Matt Medley as a write-in candidate. He represents new energetic and young leadership, which our community sorely needs. His family has two Independence businesses – his wife has a dental practice and he is opening a new microbrewery on the Independence Square. We need new perspective and sound business judgment on the City Council as it faces major decisions, particularly as it relates to major decisions involving Independence Power and Light.

We declined to endorse Mike Huff for reasons we feel compelled to share so other voters can make their own determination. Review of public records and other public information reveal someone we believe is poorly qualified to represent our community.

Huff paid delinquent property taxes totaling $14,655 only this January and only after he decided to run for City Council. Some of the delinquent taxes – mostly on rental property owned with his son – date back to 2015. These taxes support the city (for whom Huff worked) as well as school and other public institutions.

We believe candidates should pay their taxes when they are due; not when they decide to run for public office.

Huff retired from Independence Power and Light and was one of the city’s 10 highest paid employees making $162,000 in 2016. His campaign brochures trumpets – “Mike Huff: A Record of Public Service Who Cares for Our City.” We think the delinquent taxes and issues related to his rental properties suggest otherwise.

Our community needs good leaders and new leaders – not retired city employees. Vote for Karen DeLuccie and Matt Medley.
