A matchup of two of the state’s top wrestling teams, it was understandably close.

Oak Grove, a contender for the Class 2 state title, and Smithville, the No. 1-ranked Class 3 team battled back and forth until the final match decided a 38-36 win for Smithville Thursday night at Oak Grove.

Oak Grove’s Noah Sears lost an 8-2 decision to Smithville’s Jackson White in the 152-pound match as the visiting Warriors erased a 36-35 deficit for the win.

Smithville also capitalized on a pair of forfeits.

Oak Grove recorded four pins to help grab the lead. Joel Martin (182), Tyler Curd (220), Ryan Majors (285) and Keegan Scarborough (106) all won by fall for the Panthers.

Defending state champion Connor Brown (120) won a 19-2 technical fall, Tucker MacWilliam (113) won a 13-1 major decision and Tanner Pavlica (132) won a 14-7 decision.

Pavlica’s win put Oak Grove up 36-29 but a pin by Nick Bollinger (145) and White’s win gave the Warriors the win.
