Shelley Cunningham, center, a senior at William Chrisman High School, stands on the ice with former emergency patients, first responders and emergency medicine personnel before Friday's Missouri Mavericks game at the Silvertstein Eye Centers Arena. Friday was First Responders Night at the arena, and Cunningham was one of five recovered patients to be recognized after getting to meet some of the people who saved her life. Cunningham had just started to drive home from William Chrisman High School one day in February 2016 when she was broadsided by a convicted felon who was speeding in a stolen pickup truck. It took 20 minutes to extricate her from her car, and she was a in a coma for several days. Cunningham has had multiple surgeries for her injuries, spent weeks at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, before returning to school last spring in time to attend prom. She faces still another surgery for extra bone growth in her elbow. | Mike Genet/The Examiner
