A loss last week to Winnetonka led to a big win over rival Fort Osage Thursday, William Chrisman boys tennis coach Jason Grubb said.

Taniela Faletau won 8-1 in No. 1 singles and teamed with Jose Mendoza for an 8-0 No. 1 doubles victory to lead the Bears to a 9-0 win over the Indians at Santa Fe Trail Park.

"I'm so proud of my team's focus today. I challenged them to eliminate all double faults and silly mistakes so Fort would have to earn every point all day,” Grubb said. “I knew that if we played fundamental tennis, Fort Osage would have to overcome that first-match-of-the-season jitters."

Brett Wilson (8-2), Shaun Anderson (8-2), Roman Campa (8-2), Dakoda James (8-1) and Mikel Casado (8-0) completed a singles sweep for Chrisman. Wilson and James won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, and Anderson and Campa won 8-2 at No. 3.

William Chrisman’s junior varsity also won 6-3.

GRAIN VALLEY 7, EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 2: Grain Valley swept to a 3-0 advantage after doubles en route to a Missouri River Valley Conference West road win Thursday.

Colton Campbell and Alex Schnurr won a 7-5 tiebreaker to claim a 9-8 win in No. 1 doubles to spark the doubles sweep.

“Any time you can get two (wins in doubles) it’s a big deal, so to get a sweep helps even more,” Eagles coach Randy Draper said. “And the No. 1 match was a really good win for us against a really good Excelsior team. Our depth is really coming on and we’re performing well all through the lineup.”

Lindell Frye and Joel Florida won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Addison Arnold and Hunter Quintrell also won 8-1 at No. 3. Campbell, Schnurr, Hunter Hoagland and Dean Mobley added singles wins.

Grain Valley’s JV also won 7-2.
