The Fort Osage girls soccer team gave itself a chance at a to take the conference lead.

After improving to 6-1 in the Suburban Middle Six with a 3-0 victory over North Kansas City Wednesday at Staley High School, the Indians will play host to Staley at 6:30 p.m. today in a battle for first place.

Hayley Jones scored two goals and Megan Lyon added one as Fort Osage improved to 12-3 overall.

LEE’S SUMMIT NORTH 2, LEE’S SUMMIT 1: Lee’s Summit North squandered a lead with about 20 seconds left but edged rival Lee’s Summit in a shootout to solidify its hold on first place in the Suburban Big Seven.

Madelyn Robinson scored on an assist from Alexis Mitchell with about 10 minutes left in regulation to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.

But Lee’s Summit star Kayla Deavers drilled a shot past North goalkeeper Sarah Peters with 20 seconds left to tie it.

“Through OT our girls did a great job of responding to the late goal and had the better of the play,” Broncos coach Ryan Kelley said.

After North’s Gianna Palmantere hit the goalpost twice with shots in overtime, it went to a shootout. The Broncos (13-3, 8-1 Big Seven) scored on all five of their attempts by Liz Bales, Mallory Lepper, Mitchell, Palmentere and Lilli Davis, while Peters saved the final Lee’s Summit attempt to give them the win.

“It was a great show of character by the girls and they responded well to the demands of the match,” Kelley said.

OAK GROVE 10, LONE JACK 0: Carlee Doss scored six goals to lead Oak Grove to a non-conference rout of Lone Jack Wednesday at Oak Grove.

Sophie Heldenbrand added two goals as the Panthers improved to 12-5 overall. Katie Jennings and Jessica Keyser each contributed a goal for the Panthers.
