Van Horn girls soccer forward Gracie Ankrom picked up where she left off in 2017 after scoring 40-plus goals.

She scored five goals Monday to lead the Falcons to a 6-2 season-opening home win over Odessa.

“Gloria Guerrero and Gracie Ankrom passed well up top in the second half,” Falcons coach Matt Tracy said. “Gracie put our one goal in the first half from distance, which she likes to do. Her four goals second half came within about 5 minutes. (Gloria) Guerrero didn't play first half, so after she was in they worked the space up top and created opportunities.”

After Odessa tied it, Ankrom scored in the 53rd minute to put the Falcons ahead for good. She added goals in the 57th, 59th and 60th minutes to extend the advantage to 6-1.

Nina Campos capped Van Horn’s scoring with a goal in the 71st minute.

Van Horn’s junior varsity won 10-0.

GRAIN VALLEY 1, LIBERTY NORTH 1: The Eagles hung in there with Class 4 Liberty North and the match ended up in a stalemate as they tied in pool play during the Platte County Tournament Saturday.

After the Eagles scored in the sixth minute to go up 1-0, Grain Valley found the equalizer when Marissa Schmitt scored in the 27th minute on a an assist from Rylan Childers.

“It was a good game against a quality Class 4 opponent,” Grain Valley coach Tyler Nichol said. “These are the type of early season games that help us learn about ourselves.”

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS 2, OAK GROVE 0: The Panthers fell in their season opener against the Tigers Monday in the Oak Grove Panther Cup tournament.

“I am very proud of the effort these ladies gave tonight,” Oak Grove coach Zach Herzig said. “We also learned we have some things to work on, which we will start doing tomorrow.”
