Blue Springs South High School has a new football head coach.

The Blue Springs School District announced Thursday that Matt Klein will replace Jon Oyler as the Jaguars’ head coach.

Klein, who met with the Jaguar players Thursday afternoon, comes to South from Marquette High School in suburban St. Louis, where he was the head football coach from 2014 to 2018. Klein replaces Oyler, a South graduate, who coached the Jaguars the past three years and stepped down in December.

“We are excited to welcome Matt to the district,” Blue Springs School District activities director Mark Bubalo said in a press release. “We believe we have hired an excellent football coach and teacher who will carry on the fine traditions already established at South.

“He comes to us highly recommended for his ability to run a first-class program that stresses both academic and athletic excellence.”

Marquette won conference championships in 2016 and 2018 and Klein was named conference coach of the year both seasons. He compiled a 30-23 record in his five seasons leading the Mustangs, including a 6-4 mark in 2018. Those 30 wins were the school record for the most wins in a five-year period and his teams broke 18 school records. Program numbers also increased by 35 percent during his tenure.

Klein served as the head coach at Knob Noster High School in 2013 and 2014 before moving to Marquette. He also was an assistant coach at Pleasant Hill from 2008 to 2013 and started his coaching career as an assistant at Morgan County in 2007-08.
