The Kansas City Mavericks took an early lead against the South Carolina, but could not hold on for the win Saturday.

The Stingrays scored three unanswered goals in the third period to claim a 4-2 victory at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

Andrew Cherniwchan broke open the scoring for South Carolina with a goal at the 8:09 mark of the first period. Tad Kozun and Cameron Bakker assisted on the goal.

But the lead didn’t last long, as Darian Dziurzynski tied the game just over a minute later on an assist from Mavs assist leader Willie Raskob.

The Mavericks took the lead four minutes later on a goal from Nate Widman, who has goals in his last two games. Mark Cooper and Joey Sides assisted on the go-ahead goal.

The second period was scoreless, as Mavericks and Stingrays goaltenders Mason McDonald and former Maverick Parker Milner stood out, with McDonald stopping all 10 South Carolina shots and Milner stopping all 11 Kansas City shots.

South Carolina jumped on the Mavericks in the first 10 minutes of the third period, regaining the lead on goals from Kozun and Justin Samuels-Thomas to go up 3-2 on Kansas City. The Stingrays added an empty net goal in the game’s waning moments to seal the 4-2 victory, splitting the weekend series with the Mavericks.
